How Does The League Select Issues for Emphasis?

In League, Program means the issues that we choose for concerted study, education and action at local, state, regional and national levels. Program can include both education and action.

The Program Planning process is part of what makes the League a grassroots organization; each League member has the opportunity to influence the selection of issues where the local, state, and national League will focus time, talent and money.

Every two years, members of local Leagues engage in Program Planning for national and local Leagues, and in alternating years for state and regional Leagues. Based on the results of this, the respective League Board of Directors makes recommendations to the biennial convention delegates about the program to be adopted for the coming two year period (which can include action on existing positions).

The entire process results positions for education and advocacy at every level of League--local, state, regional and national. Current postions are re-adopted at each convention as part of the two year program. See the Positions page  for more information on positions for each League and below for specific links.

Read about how the LWV works with the UN.  The League of Women Voters supports a strong, effective United Nations and endorses the full and active participation of the United States in the UN system.  This Position of support for the United Nations was adopted in June 1977 and updated in June 2002. LWV campaigned to establish a United Nations and continues its engagement with the UN through its UN Observers. Read about LWV’s history with the United Nations and the latest updates on the LWVFA website page titled "The LWV and the UN."  Also see the League's blog for various articles written by the observers about LWV's advocacy with the UN during 2019 (on pages 2-6 and earlier).  The LWVUS United Nations Facebook page has updates too.
